Ahmedabad is the Indian city that has been listed by TIME magazine in its list of the ‘World’s greatest places’ of 2022.
Time Magazine said, “As India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City, Ahmedabad boasts both ancient landmarks and contemporary innovations that make it a mecca for cultural tourism.”
Ahmedabad, also known as Amdavad, was named after Sultan Ahmed Shah, who founded the city in 1411. Ahmedabad is the most populous city in the state of Gujarat and has about 8,253,000 residents. It is located near the banks of Sabarmati, about 25km from the capital Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad has emerged as an important economic, industrial hub of India and is the second-largest producer of cotton in India. Ahmedabad is also often referred as the ‘Manchester of India’.
Mahatma Gandhi lived in Ahmedabad for several years and it was from here that he started the Dandi March, also known as the Salt March, an act of nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience against British rule in India.
Bhadra Fort, Shaking Minarets and Tran Darwaja are the foremost historical sites of the city. Sabarmati Ashram, The Adalaj Stepwell, Kankaria Lake are also among the various tourist spots.
In 2010, Ahmedabad ranked third in the list of Forbes growing cities of the decade. It is also one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as smart cities under the Government of India flagship programme of Smart City’s Mission. In July 2017, old Ahmedabad was also declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
