Marty Chavez joined Google’s parent company Alphabet after stepping away from his role as the Goldman Sachs executive in 2020.
“It’s an honor to join Alphabet’s Board of Directors. The company’s mission to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful has never been more important than it is today, and I’m thrilled to help advance this important work”, he said.
After a series of senior roles, Chavez rose to the top position in the Wall Street bank and was touted as the potential future chief executive.
“I would read that and think, ‘Who writes this stuff?’ Many of the jobs I had at Goldman were a surprise, they were not jobs I had targeted or coveted”, Chavez said, adding, “It was more, ‘Wow, the universe is a strange and wonderful place’. It is a Goldman thing where if you’re asked to do a particular job, there is a huge cultural value of just saying yes.”
Since the time Chavez left Goldman, he’s held a series of jobs including board roles at MIT and Harvard. He was also on the Stanford Medicine Board of Fellows and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Chavez has also been the chair of the board of directors for Recursion Pharmaceuticals.
The addition of the Wall Street banker brings a degree of financial clout to the tech company and also marks Alphabet’s first board change since 2020 when former Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt departed.
