Keanu
Reeves
recently opened up about ‘The Matrix’, saying that a trans character was
removed from the script. He noted that the studio was not ready for it. In the
1999 film, Switch is an androgynous character. A man was supposed to play the
role in the real world, and a woman would play the part in the Matrix world.

Lilly
Wachowski, the director, also weighed in on the issue, saying that the character
was ultimately played by a woman in both worlds. ‘The Matrix’ has often been
viewed as a tale of transformation and a desire for it. However, Wachowski
feels that the corporate world was not quite ready for it, which is why the
narration took place from a closeted viewpoint.

Switch
stood out in the movie as the only character on the Nebuchadnezzar who did not
wear the iconic black trench coat. Nonetheless, the character ultimately did
not get much screen time. While ‘The Matrix’ is now seen as a tale of trans
experience, especially after the director confirmed the metaphor, the film was
written long before Wachowski came out as transgender.

Reeves
also admitted that he was unaware of the deeper meaning of the film while
playing the protagonist, Neo. The ‘John Wick’ star stated that neither did he
speak to the director about it, nor was it conveyed to him by Wachowski.
However, even without realizing the script’s depth, Reeves acknowledged that ‘The
Matrix’ movies were profound, and several people could attest to its
allegorical value.

Now,
the franchise is adding another movie at a time when society is much more sensitized
to trans experiences. ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ is scheduled to release on
December 22, 2021, in theatres and on HBO Max. Currently, not much is known
about the upcoming movie, except for the fact that Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are
reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.
