Best known for starring on ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’, American singer Olivia Rodrigo on Sunday won the Best  New Artist of the Year at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards. The 18-year-old had also bagged the song of the year award for her  “Driver’s License”. 

Rodrigo was nominated alongside 24kGoldn, Giveon, The Kid Laroi, Polo G and Saweetie.

Thanking all her fans in her acceptance speech, Rodrigo said that she feels grateful to get to write music and ‘make stuff’ that she loves. 

“This has been the most magical year of my life,” Rodrigo had said after getting the song of the year award.

Rodrigo released her official debut single “Drivers License” in January and soon broke streaming records. It reigned atop the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks.  

She also dominated the charts with hits like “Deja Vu” and “Good 4 U”.

The singer performed “Good 4 U” at the Barclays, New York on Sunday. Rodrigo was nominated across six categories in the 2021 VMA. 

The MTV Video Music Awards kicked off late on Sunday night and is all set to be a star-studded event with celebrities like Justin Bieber, Camila Cabelo, and The Kid Laroi taking the stage.

The presenters at the MTV Video Music Awards will include Rita Ora, 50 Cent, Megan Fox, Billy Porter, Travis Barker, Conor McGregor and Fat Joe, Associated Press reported.  

This year’s VMA awards featured performances from Alicia Keys and Swae Lee, Camila Cabello, Chlöe, Doja Cat, Foo Fighters, Justin Bieber and The Kid Laroi, Kacey Musgraves, Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow, Normani, Ozuna, Machine Gun Kelly and Travis Barker, Shawn Mendes and Tainy, and Twenty One Pilots.
