R&B singer Jesse Powell died at the age of 51 at his Los Angeles home, his family said in a statement on Instagram.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, and uncle Jesse Powell,” the post by Jesse’s sister, singer Tamara Powell, read.

“He passed away peacefully in his Los Angeles home. The family asks for privacy at this time as we mourn this tremendous loss and celebrate his everlasting legacy. Jesse loved music and he especially loved his fans who supported him throughout his career. We want you all to know that you meant the world to him. – The Powell Family.”

Powell was best known for his 1996 hit song “You” which peaked at No. 2 on R&B Billboard charts and at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. 

The family did not reveal the cause of death. 

Born on September 12, 1971, Jesse produced four studio albums during his career. He also had a Grammy nomination. His first single All I Need was written by Powell, Sam Salter and Laney Stewart and was released in March 1996. He released his self-titled debut album in March 1996 via Silas Records/MCA. It included the singles All I Need, Gloria and I Like It.

Following the news of his death, several of his fans shared their tributes on Twitter.

“It’s very shocking to hear about his sudden passing. Rest in peace, Jesse,” one user wrote. Another said: “‘You’ is one of my favorite love songs. I always wanted that song to be played at my wedding. R.I.P. Jesse Powell.”
