A shooting near Stewart Funeral Home in Washington D.C. left 1 dead and 3 others injured on Tuesday.

Although the police have not been able to establish any relationship between the funeral home and the shooting, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee said at a news conference that authorities believe that the shooter targeted several people who were standing near the block after the funeral was over. The 25-year-old person whose funeral was being conducted was killed in March.

The funeral has a 100-year-old history behind it. It was established by John Thomas Stewart, a young African American, “marking the beginning of a rich heritage and tradition of unique professional and community service to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area that is referred to by the family as ‘The Tradition of Stewartship’.”

It was originally located at 62 H Street, Northwest but was later shifted to later moved the business to 30 H Street when John decided to expand. The business was taken over by John T. Stewart, Jr. He and his wife Margaret Stewart — who gave up her career as a teacher in Prince George’s County — dedicated themselves to community service.

The home is currently owned by the fourth generation of the family, Margarent’s sons John T. Stewart, III and Carlin O. Stewart, Sr., along with grandchildren Carlin, Jr. and Stacye.
