US pop star Britney Spears is attempting to remove her father from a controversial conservatorship and put in place an independent accountant, according to media reports citing court documents filed on Monday.
The 39-year-old singer is being assisted by Mathew Rosengart, an attorney appointed to take on Britney Spears’ legal bids. The attorney had pledged to move swiftly to pick out Jamie Spears from the conservatorship, which was labelled as “cruelty” by the singer in court testimony.
Britney Spears told a Los Angeles court, through a telephonic conversation, that she wishes to press charges against father Jamie Spears. She further stated, “If the court doesn’t see this as abuse… I don’t know what is”, according to reports from AFP.
Rosengart argued in the petition that as a recent judge’s ruling found “Ms. Spears has sufficient capacity to choose her own legal counsel, she likewise has sufficient capacity to make this nomination,” The New York Times reported.
Fans of Britney Spears had taken over social media with ‘#FreeBritney’ in order to raise awareness about the alleged abuse faced by the 39-year-old and to garner further support.

Spears was placed under a unique legal guardianship largely governed by her father after she suffered a highly public 2007 breakdown.
Britney Spears also told the court that she was restricted from making choices about her own body. She said that even though she wanted to have more children, she was not to get her contraceptive IUD removed.
Moreover, the 39-year-old singer opened up about her issues on social media and also announced that she would not be partaking in any further performances on stage “anytime soon” with her father being in charge of what she wore, said, did or thought.
