Pedro Almodóvar’s new short film, Strange Way of Life, is set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May, with a star-studded cast and a queer Western plotline.

Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar is set to release his second English-language short film, Strange Way of Life, in May. Created in collaboration with Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello, who serves as a producer and lead costume designer for the film, Strange Way of Life is a queer western featuring an all-star cast.

Release Date

Strange Way of Life is set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival between May 16 to May 27. The film is set to premiere in Spain on May 26.

Plot

The 30-minute feature revolves around Silva, played by Pedro Pascal, who rides a horse across the desert to visit his friend Sheriff Jake, portrayed by Ethan Hawke, after 25 years. They celebrate the meeting, but the next morning Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not to go down memory lane about their friendship.

Cast

In addition to Pascal and Hawke, the film features Manu Rios from Elite, a Spanish thriller television series. Rios’ character has not been revealed yet. The film is produced by Agustín Almodóvar, Pedro’s brother, and Esther García, who have worked with Pedro on previous films.

Pedro Almodóvar has directed and written the screenplay for the film. It is his second English-language film after The Human Voice starring Tilda Swinton, which premiered in 2020.

A trailer for the film has been released, giving a glimpse into the storyline and style of the movie. The trailer features vibrant costumes and scenery, and a touch of Almodóvar’s signature humor and melodrama.

Pedro Pascal, known for his roles in Narcos and Game of Thrones, shared in a recent interview that working with Pedro Almodóvar was a liberating experience. He said that Almodóvar “absolutely opened up an entire world of storytelling, color, culture, rebellion, and sexuality that was just absolutely intoxicating, dangerous, hilarious, heartbreaking, and encompassing the whole spectrum, but with such a signature style.”

Strange Way of Life is Almodóvar’s first western and is a project he has been wanting to do for a long time. He previously revealed that he was approached to direct Brokeback Mountain but his vision was deemed too explicit for Hollywood, and Ang Lee was ultimately chosen as the director.
