This is the first directorial venture of Eric Appel. He has earlier worked on TV shows like Son of Zorn, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The Office. Regarding his choice of the film’s subject, Appel said, “When Weird Al first sat me down against my will and told me his life story, I didn’t believe any of it, but I knew that we had to make a movie about it.” Appel wrote the film’s script along with the real-life Al Yankovic. Besides Radcliffe and Wood, the film also stars Will Ferrell and Rainn Wilson.

Notably, just like Yankovic’s songs, the film too is a parody of biopics. It shows Madonna coming to Yankovic’s house to ask him to make a parody of her song, Like A Virgin, and then the two end up getting physically intimate. Moreover, they also start a romantic relationship. The reality is that Yankovic realized the superstar singer wanted him to make a parody of her song via mutual friends.

Madonna, who is a prominent character in the film, is writing and directing a biopic on herself. Julia Garner is set to portray the 64-year-old.
