Netflix has dropped the teaser of Wednesday, the new series by director Tim Burton that makes Wednesday Addams, the daughter of the famous Addams family, the subject of its story. The visceral teaser announces that the series will be “full of mystery, mayhem, and murder”.

The teaser begins with Wednesday attending a new school where everyone looks at her in a strange way and a member of the school swimming team calls her a “freak”. Wednesday, in retaliation, releases a number of piranhas in the pool, which end up attacking the swimming team members. Consequently, she is expelled from the school.

This is when Wednesday’s parents, Gomez and Morticia Addams, take her to Nevermore Academy, a place where she will get to interact with a lot of like-minded people. 

While Jenna Ortega plays the eponymous character in the series, Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Morticia and Luis Guzmán portrays her father Gomez. Wednesday’s brother, Pugsley, is played by Isaac Ordonez. Other members of the cast include 

Gwendoline Christie (of Game of Thrones fame), Jamie McShane, Percy Hynes White, Hunter Doohan, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Naomi J Ogawa, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Riki Lindhome, and Christina Ricci, who herself had portrayed Wednesday in the 1991 Barry Sonnenfeld movie, The Addams Family.

Notably, Tim Burton was set to direct the 1991 film before Sonnenfield took charge. Burton had to back off owing to scheduling concerns with his film Batman Returns. However, regarding the series, co-showrunner Miles Millar said, “It’s something that lives within the Venn diagram of what happened before, but it’s its own thing,” he said. “It’s not trying to be the movies or the ’60s TV show. That was very important to us and very important to Tim”.

While Alfred Gough and Millar are the showrunners of the series, Burton, Gandja Monteiro, and James Marshall. There will be a total of eight episodes in the series, which is scheduled to release this fall.
