Classic American rock songs were known to have hidden meanings behind their lyrics, with the trend becoming less popular in the new age music. However, when fans discovered the meaning behind Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed a Girl’, some were surprised while others saw it coming due to the singer’s’ ahead of her time’ attitude.

The term ‘Cherry Chapstick’ was originally thought to be a reference to Katy Perry kissing another girl and tasting the cherry chapstick she would have previously applied. However, according to reports from Joyscribe, the term actually was a reference to another girl’s genitalia.

The lyrics of the song take listeners through the singer’s experience of a night out of partying with friends with an unusual encounter. Katy Perry refers to a “boyfriend” in the song, which hints at her predominant heterosexual preferences. However, she later goes on to say that she kissed a girl and she liked it more than once through out the three-minute-long track.

How did fans figure out the meaning years after the song was released?

The song was featured on a show called ‘Just Dance’, according to US media reports. While the song was played, the “cherry chapstick” part was beeped out, while the rest of the song was left untouched. Due to this, fans started suspecting another layer of hidden meaning and drawing up interpretations.
