Antoine Fuqua is an American filmmaker, known for his work in the action and thriller genres. He is the director of the upcoming movie Emancipation.

It is a 2022 American historical action movie that has been written by William N. Collage. It is based on the true account of Gordon, a former slave who goes by the name “Peter” in the movie. It also featured images of his naked back that were widely disseminated in 1863 and showed him brutally scourged from an overseer’s whippings.

On October 1, 2022, Emancipation had its world premiere in Washington, D.C. It will be released in a few theaters on December 2, 2022, before it is streamed on Apple TV+ on December 9, 2022.

Who is Antoine Fuqua?

American director Antoine Fuqua was born on January 19, 1966, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is renowned for his work in the thriller and action genres.

He was born to Carlos and Mary Fuqua and he is the nephew of record producer and executive Harvey Fuqua of the Moonglows.

He studied electrical engineering before becoming a filmmaker

Antoine Fuqua became engaged to Lela Rochon in 1998, and the couple got married on April 9, 1999. The couple has two children, Brando Fuqua born in May 2004, and daughter Asia Rochon Fuqua born on July 28, 2002. 

Career 

Antonio Fuqua began his career as a music video director for well-known performers like Toni Braxton, Stevie Wonder, and Prince.  He had directed Michelle Pfeiffer in the video Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio which was used to promote Jerry Bruckheimer’s successful film Dangerous Minds. 

Fuqua started focusing on directing feature films in 1998. In a commemorative piece for Time magazine, Fuqua discussed how Kurosawa inspired his own view of filmmaking.

His first feature film was the John Woo-produced action film. The Replacement Killers in 1998 starring Chow Yun Fat. This was followed by the action comedy Bait in 2000 starring Jamie Foxx. 

In 2001 he directed the criminal thriller Training Day and the lead of the film, Denzel Washington, received the Best Actor Oscar.

Some of the other films of his career as a director include ShooterBrooklyn’s FinestOlympus Has Fallen, and The Equalizer.

He co-created the comic-book miniseries After Dark with Wesley Snipes, which was written by Peter Milligan and illustrated by Jeff Nentrup.  

Fuqua and actor Will Smith spoke about their upcoming movie, Emancipation. He signed a first look agreement with Netflix on December 3, 2021. He also changed the name of his production firm, Fuqua Films, to Hill District Media in the same year. He had also signed a broad television contract with MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Television Studios.
