President Joe Biden and director Eva Longoria invited hundreds to the White House grounds on Thursday to watch the new film ‘Flamin’ Hot’, a feel-good tale about how a Mexican American caretaker working at Frito-Lay persuaded his superiors to implement his proposal to spice up the crunchy snack’s cheesy coating.

They depicted the story of former caretaker Richard Montaez, which is based on his memoir, as an illustrative example of how one guy reached for a goal and conquered the odds, gliding through warning signs indicating Montaez’ account is questionable.

Biden told the crowd: “When I think about tonight’s movie, I think about courage. So many of you, your ancestors left behind all that they knew to start a new life in the United States.”

Because she had been told “no” throughout her career—that ideas don’t come from people like her—and that she couldn’t perform certain tasks because she is a woman, Longoria claimed that Montaez’s tale inspired her. She claimed that her group put in a lot of effort “to produce this authentic film steeped in inclusion.”

First lady Jill Biden said Montañez helped change the way companies think about Latino customers, adding: “This film isn’t just about Richard. It’s about everyone who has been overlooked or underestimated.”

The Los Angeles Times has published allegations that Montañez fabricated his role in the snack’s creation.

An official from the White House defended the choice to broadcast the movie, claiming that it is not a documentary and that it was screened to allow Americans of many backgrounds the opportunity to see themselves reflected in cinema and praised by the president, as was done with other film screened this year.
