Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley, a reggae musician who was the grandson of Bob Marley, has died aged 31. His father, Stephen Marley, is also an accomplished reggae musician.

Marley’s cause of death has not been revealed yet. 

Jamaica’s Opposition Leader, Mark J. Golding, said regarding Marley’s death, “I’ve just learned of the tragic loss of Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley. A talented young reggae artiste, son of Stephen Marley & grandson of Bob Marley at only 31 yrs old. The loss of a child is a devastating blow no parent should face, my condolences to Stephen & the entire family.”

Who was Jo Mersa Marley?

Jo Mersa Marley was born on March 12, 1991. He is the son of Stephen Marley, an eight-time Grammy Award winner. Jo Mersa was born in Jamaica where he attended Saints Peter and Paul Preparatory School. He was the eldest of five sisters and eight brothers.

Marley lived in Jamaica till the age of 12, after which he began living in Miami, Florida. Marley joined Palmetto High School in Miami and later studied studio engineering at the Miami Dade College.

Jo Mersa was introduced to music at a very early age, thanks to the influence of his family. He even took to the stage at a young age, performing with his father as well as the Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, while speaking about his musical background, Marley had said, “It was a very magical thing, seeing those people come around to the house and how the whole work process would happen,” further adding, “I would come home and try to do homework, but I’d end up getting distracted and go peek in the studio. You would always want to run in and run out to see what was going on.”

Marley’s first official song, My Girl, was released when he was in middle school. His debut EP , titled Comfortable, came out in 2014.

Jo Mersa joined his father Stephen on the song Relevation Party, which is a part of the latter’s Grammy-winning album, Revelation Part 2: The Fruit of Life.
