Lightyear‘ is a spin-off of ‘Toy Story‘, which introduced the popular character Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen, who’s now weighed in on the new Chris Evans’ take on the original.

Allen, 69, explained to ‘Extra’, “The short answer is I’ve stayed out of this because it has nothing to do [with my character]”, adding, “This is a whole new team that really had nothing to do with the first movies.”

The new movie comes from Angus MacLane, who was an animator on the second and third ‘Toy Story’ films. While Allen had been in contact with Pixar, years ago, about a potential standalone Lightyear movie, he was under the impression it’d be a live-action project and not an animated film.

Allen said of ‘Lightyear’, “It’s a wonderful story”, but added, “It just doesn’t seem to have any connection to the toy, and it’s a little…I don’t know. It just has no relationship to Buzz. It’s just no connection. I wish there was a better connection to this.”

Allen’s friend and Emmy-winning actor Patricia Heaton had also protested the recasting, saying Pixar “made a huge mistake in not casting my pal in the role that he originated, the role that he owns.” The ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ actor continued on Twitter, saying “The reason the character became so beloved is because of what [Allen] created. Why remove the one element that makes us want to see it? #stupidHollywooddecisions.”

‘Lightyear’ has not done too well at the box office either, grossing only $51 million in its opening weekend. This puts it low on Pixar’s success char behind movies like 2017’s ‘Cars 3’, which made $59 million. The ‘Toy Story’ spinoff has also become a rare Pixar movie not to land the top spot at the box office, coming in behind ‘Jurassic World: Dominion‘.
