The fans were left gritting when it was
announced that Ellen Pompeo’s contract had been renewed for another season
merely three weeks before the seventeenth season’s finale was aired.

It is well known that the show will
not survive without its lead character Meredith Grey and from the information
that is presently available, Ellen has not signed a contract for another season

While talking to Entertainment Tonight,
the actress revealed that the show’s ending is not far off.  Pompeo stated, “I mean, I’ve been trying to get away for years. I have
been trying. It’s not because I haven’t been trying, I have strong
relationships at the network and they have been very, very good to me, and have
incentivized me to stay.”

She insisted she will keep on coming
back for more if there is a good reason to continue.

When asked whether the show’s journey
ends here, she said, “I’m not
really supposed to say anything about it,” she said. “I don’t want to
be disrespectful to people I’ve promised things to.”

The executive
producer and showrunner Kristina Vernoff revealed that it is frustrating to not
know whether the show is heading for a series finale or just another season.

While Grey’s Anatomy has drifted away
from pop culture, the show has managed to amass a loyal fanbase over the years.

The seventeenth season finale recorded
a viewership of over 4.6 million people. In 2020-2021 it was the sixth most
popular show, just behind the likes of This Is Us, The Masked Singer.

Many had speculated that the show will
end with the seventeenth season when it was brought to life with a season based
on the coronavirus pandemic.

Meredith spent most of her time in a
coma and shared moments with several characters who had left the show in
earlier season.

The fans deserve to know beforehand
when a show they have shared a huge chunk of their lives with is set to disappear
from the screen. For that reason, we hope Grey’s Anatomy does not end here and
keeps on bringing happiness in the lives of its viewers.
