The health ministry on Friday said that India had conducted 848,728 tests in the last 24 hours, which is the highest as of now. This has taken the cumulative number of tests to 27,694,416, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated on Friday.

The country recorded a spike of 64,553 new cases of infection on Thursday and registered 1,007 new deaths. The cumulative number of infections has risen to 2,461,19,1 with 661,595 active cases. This makes India the third worst-hit nation in the world, just after the United States and Brazil.

However, the recovery rate in India stands at 71.17%, which has improved in the recent year. The fatality rate is 1.95%, making it one of the lowest in the world.

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are the worst affected states in the country, with the city of Mumbai having more cases than Canada.
