India recorded 48,786 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, while 1,005 people died of the infection in the same period, data from the health ministry confirmed on Thursday. This takes India’s total infection tally to 30,411,634, with the revised death toll at 399,459.

There are a total of 523,257 active cases in the country, while the total number of recoveries has jumped to 29,488,918 with 61,588 patients being discharged in the last 24 hours. 

According to data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 412,021,494 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till July 1. 1,921,450 of these samples were tested on Wednesday. 

As of Wednesday, India has administered at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in a total of 335,716,019 people. The country’s mass vaccination campaign began on January 16.

India has witnessed a steady decline in cases in recent months, after reporting an unprecedented surge in COVID cases in the summer.

At the peak of the second wave, the country reported well over 400,000 daily infections along with over 4,500 deaths in one day. On Monday, the country reported less than 40,000 fresh COVID cases for the first time in 102 days.

India’s COVID tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7; 50 lakh on September 16 and surpassed one crore on December 19. The country crossed the grim milestone of 2 crore cases on May 4 and 3 crore on June 23.

On Tuesday, Mumbai-based pharmaceutical company Cipla got the approval to import and distribute the Moderna vaccine in India. It will be the fourth vaccine approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).
