United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson has cut short his India visit due to the COVID-19 situation in the South Asian country, Downing Street said on Wednesday, PTI reported. Johnson, who will visit India on April 26, was scheduled to spend a few days in the country. But as India is reeling under an aggressive second wave of the novel coronavirus, his itinerary was reworked.

The major part of the high-level bilateral interactions, including bilateral talks with PM Narendra Modi, is now scheduled to be limited to New Delhi on April 26.

“We have been in close contact with the Indian government about the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit in light of the Covid situation in India. As a result of these discussions, the Prime Minister has made the decision to reduce the length of the visit, due to take place at the end of this month, to a shorter programme in New Delhi,” the UK PM’s spokesperson at 10 Downing Street said, as per the news report.

The programme will be focused on high-level discussions with the Indian government and Indian business leaders, the official said.

“We’ll set out more details in due course, but the visit will include a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi,” the spokesperson said, adding that all precautions regarding COVID-19 will be taken.

The announcement was made on the day India recorded the highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths. 184,372 new infections and 1,027 fatalities pushed India’s tally of cases to 1,38,73,825 and death toll to 1,72,085.

Johnson got infected with the virus in April, last year and spent three days in the intensive care unit.

He was earlier scheduled to visit India in January, as the chief guest on Republic Day. However, he postponed the trip over the pandemic situation in his country.
