Amazon Quiz: Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh is set to become India’s first sanctuary for what animal?

Eurasian skylarks

Cheetahs

Pharaoh ant

Yellow-bellied toad

Answer: Cheetahs

The Cheetah, which is widely known as the planet’s fastest land animal, has an uncertain future with an estimated 7,100 of their kind left in the wild. Adult cheetahs’ weight averages between 75 and 125 pounds. They can measure from 40 to 60 inches in length.

Cheetahs are listed as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. A recent study revealed significant population declines. With the numbers declining, scientists are calling for cheetahs to be uplisted to “Endangered”.

In North Africa and Asia, they are considered “Critically Endangered”.

One of the main threats that cheetahs face are due to the human-animal conflict. Farmers frequently kill cheetahs, either preemptively or in retaliation for livestock predation. Deforestation, loss of prey from human hunting and the development of land for agricultural and other purposes have largely affected the animals.

Poaching, in some parts of Africa, for their skins has contributed to cheetah population declines. Illegal trade of live cubs and adults have also resulted in their number decline as many die during transport.

In 1952, Cheetah was declared extinct in India after the last one surviving was hunted down in Chhattisgarh.

Last year, and initiative was launched to re introduce the animal into the country at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

Kuno’s initiative to bring 13 African cheetahs was described as the worlds largest intercontinental animal translocation.
