In June, Asian Games champion Rahi Sarnobat won gold in the Women’s 25M Pistol event during the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun stage in Croatia’s Osijek. She beat reigning Olympic Champion Anna Korakaki of Greece. Rahi shot 39 hits out of a possible 50, including four perfect series of 5/5 hits in a row, to leave silver medal-winning Frenchwoman Mathilde Lamollle way behind on 31 hits.
Sarnobat belongs to Maharashtra’s Kolhapur and was introduced to shooting in her school days as part of NCC training. Her home town had inadequate infrastructure and facilities, so she decided to train in Mumbai. She considers fellow Maharashtrian and 50m rifle pro World Champion Tejaswini Sawant as her inspiration.
She became India’s first pistol shooter to win a gold medal in the World Cup. In the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, she won gold in the women’s 25 metre pistol event. She did not compete for two years due to an injury caused by an accident in 2015. She made it back to the Indian national team and started working with German coach Munkhbayar Dorjsuren.
On July 30, 2021, shooters Manu Bhaker and Rahi Sarnobat crashed out of the 25m pistol qualifications (rapid fire stage) of Tokyo Olympics as both finished outside the top-8. They returned home empty-handed for the second straight time at the Olympics.
