The Tatrakshak Medal is a military decoration which is conferred upon the deserving, for their selfless devotion, meritorious and dedicated service to the Indian Coast Guard. This honour is usually given on days of national celebration, like Independence Day or Republic Day. 

Established on February 1, 1977, the Indian Coast Guard is a maritime agency engaged in law enforcement, as well as search and rescue activities. The governmental body has jurisdiction over India’s territorial waters, including exclusive economic and contagious zones. Krishnaswamy Natarajan is the current Director General of the agency whose motto translates to ‘We protect’. 

The Indian Coast Guard has its headquarters at the Ministry of Defence, New Delhi.
