The Louvre in Paris is among the largest and busiest museums in Europe, which sees an average footfall of nearly 15,000 people in a day.

Constructed as a fortress before being turned into a royal palace in the 16th century and becoming a museum finally in 1793, the Louvre remained closed for a while when it was deemed that the infrastructure posed a danger to visitors.

If you plan on visiting the museum in a day, it is an impossible feat to check out all the artwork. The Louvre boasts a vast collection, of which around 66% of the artwork is by French artists. Even if one were to rush through the galleries, it’d still take nearly 100 consecutive days to be done with a full tour.

Mona Lisa, the world’s most famous painting is hosted in this gallery. Leonardo da Vinci’s work is safely behind a glass case with barricades around to prevent admirers from getting too close.

When the Nazis took over Paris, they looted art from various households. They were all hosted in the Louvre, which was emptied, and served as a storeroom of sorts.

The glass pyramid, which is now an unmissable part of the Parisian skyline, was added much later to the original museum’s architecture and is the work of a Chinese man.
