On March 15, 2022, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that making India’s first electric highway connecting the capital Delhi with the city of Jaipur in Rajasthan would be a dream project.
Speaking at an event, the 64-year-old said, “My dream is to make an electric highway between Delhi and Jaipur.”
As per a PTI report, Gadkari may well be able to fulfill his dream: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocated Rs 1.99 lakh crore to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India, of which Rs 1.34 lakh crore is earmarked for allocation to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to meet Gadkari’s goal of constructing 50km of highways every day.
Long an advocate for the electrification of vehicles, Gadkari has also been pushing to improve the adoption of electric vehicles in India as tries to advance a green mobility agenda.
In the past, the 64-year-old had urged US companies to increase their investment in India in a bid to improve the country’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure, something that is a critical factor determining the adoption of electric vehicles anywhere.
Gadkari has also been pushing for the adoption of battery swapping technology and the establishment of standards for electric vehicle batteries. The minister also recently started advocating the use of flex-fuel, and has reportedly urged auto manufacturers to start producing flex-fuel engines in six months.
