Penguin
Answer: Galapagos Penguin
One
of the smallest penguins in the world, the Galapagos penguin is the only
penguin species found north of the equator. They are extremely agile under
water and can reach speeds of 35 km per hour when hunting. Their diet
consists of cold-water schooling fish, such as anchovies, sardines and mullet.
They mate for life, with the female laying between one and two eggs which are
incubated for 35-40 days.
Penguin
breeding success is linked to environmental conditions; therefore climate
change is a causing a threat to their future. In 1982, a El Niño event caused
77% of the population to die of starvation. The current population of the
species is estimated to be just 2,000 birds.
They
are found mainly on Isabela and Fernandina islands in Galapagos. They can also
be seen on Floreana, Santiago and Bartolome. People are often seen swimming
with the penguins around Pinnacle Rock on Bartolome.
The
major threats to them on land are snakes, owls and hawks, Cats and rats
frequently attack both adults and eggs. In the sea, sharks, fur seals or sea
lions are the major threat. They are also sometimes caught as by-catch in
fishing nets.
