Native to the steppes of Central Asia, Prezwalski’s horse goes by many names: it is also known as Mongolian wild horse and Dzungarian horse, and is a rare and endangered species.
This breed of horse gets its rather unorthodox name from a Russian explorer and geographer named Nikołaj Przewalski and actually went extinct in the wild.
However, they were reintroduced to their natural habitats in the 1990s and can be found in Mongolia in the Khustain Nuruu National Park, Takhin Tal Nature Reserve, and Khomiin Tal, as well as across various parts of Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
Typically smaller and shorter than domestic horses, Prezwalski’s horse also differs from its domestic counterpart in terms of genetics: it has 33 pairs of chromosomes as opposed to a domestic horses’ 32.
Prezwalski’s horse was long considered the world’s only remaining wild horse breed because other ‘wild’ horses so to speak such as the American Mustang or the Australian brumby are actual feral horse that are descendants of domestic horses, and not true wild horses.
However, this assumption was challenged in 2018 after it was discovered that horses of the Prezwalski lineage had been associated with a 5,000-year-old human culture, thereby raising questions about whether it had been domesticated.
That being said, the debate about whether the breed is wild or not is unresolved as of now.
