Australian wicket-keeper batter Alyssa Healy was named the Player of the Tournament in the recently concluded ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup after leading her team to a 71-run win over England in the final.
An opener for Australia, Healy scored a whopping 509 runs over nine innings, more than any player in the tournament.
She averaged 56.55 runs with the bat, and also contributed to eight dismissals – four catches and four stumpings.
Commenting on her explosive form after the conclusion of the tournament, Healy said, “I wish people would stop asking me that question … I still haven’t come up with an answer.”
“I’m really enjoying the top of the order, the freedom out there. Our batting lineup really enables us to play freely and play that fearless cricket that we keep talking about,” she explained.
“I knew it would come off eventually, and the team did come off over the last six weeks,” the 32-year-old said, adding, “I’m looking forward to going home and playing in the Big Bash League and seeing if I can continue.”
The win saw Healy join women’s cricketing greats such as Australia captain Karen Rolton, who won the award in 2005. She also joins contemporary international stars such as England’s Claire Taylor, New Zealand’s Suzie Bates, and England’s Tammy Beaumont, who have also won the coveted award.
