Kelly Holmes is a former English middle distance runner, who specialised in the 800 metres and 1,500 metres events. She won gold medals in both events at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. 

She has also set British records in a number of events, holding the records in the 600m and 1,000m races. Her record in the 800m event was broken earlier this year. 

She was inspired by the achievements of British middle-distance runner in the early 1980s and started competing in those events since her youth. She joined the British Army and continued competing in athletics, turning professional in 1993. The next year, she won the 1,500m race at the Commonwealth Games and bagged silver at the European Championships.  

She also won a silver at the 1998 Commonwealth Games before winning her first Olympic medal, a bronze at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She has won a number of awards for her achievements and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2005. 

She retired from athletics in 2005.
