People have called for a boycott of Farhan Akhtar‘s upcoming movie ‘Toofan’ over the actor’s stance on the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA). #BoycottToofan has been trending on Twitter. Some users believe that the movie, set to release on July 16, promotes Love Jihad. 

During the ant-CAA and National Register of Citizens (NRC) protests in late 2019-2020, Farhan Akhtar stated that he felt something was wrong with the act. When asked about what he thought of the government’s assurances, Farhan, who was at a protest site, said, “As a citizen of the country and as somebody who was born and has grown up with a certain idea of India is, it is important for me to raise my voice… If everything was ok, why would so many people turn up? Not just in Mumbai, but Delhi, Assam, Bangalore, Hyderabad.”

Union Minister Smriti Irani had also reacted to a meme-version of the interview that compared Farhan’s statements to a scene from Abhishekh Bachchan-starrer ‘Bunty aur Babli’. 

However, it seems like Farhan Akhtar’s movie is facing some backlash over his comments, just like  Janhvi Kapoor’s ‘Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’ and Alia Bhatt’s ‘Sadak 2’ did.

Twitter users also believe that ‘Toofan’ promotes Love Jihad. Farhan, who plays a boxer, Aziz Ali aka Ajju Bhai is seen married to Dr Pooja Shah, portrayed by Mrunal Thakur.

Farhan Akhtar shared the first look from the film and soon his comment section was flooded by thousands of comments with #BoycottToofan. 

“When life gets harder, you just get stronger. Iss saal #Toofan uthega. Releasing on 2.10.2020,” wrote Farhan while sharing a still.

“#BoycottToofaan love jihad is Bollywood’s target to hindus!?  So many films!  Is not systematically targeting hindus? #BoycottBollywood,” a Twitter user wrote. 

“Amir khan insults Lord Shiva. Saif ali khan, Salman khan insults our Sadhus ? Farrah akthar promotes Lovejihad ? The one thing is common I.e defamation of Hindu culture ? Be ready to #BoycottToofaan Many Hindu girls are victims of #lovejihaad because of such brain washing,” another one commented,
