Protest
broke out at Chandigarh University in Punjab’s Mohali after rumours spread on
social media that a girl allegedly leaked private videos of her hostel mates on
the internet. The girl has been arrested and police have registered a case. The
rumour on social media was that videos of students bathing had emerged on the
internet. Cops have also rubbished rumours of students attempting suicide over
the leaked videos.
1. After rumour emerged that videos of
60 girls bathing were leaked on social media, police were called in and the
girl has been arrested. A forensic probe of the girl’s mobile phone is being
conducted and cops are on the chase for a man from Shimla known to the accused.
2. Mohali police chief Vivek Soni said,
“So far in our investigation, we have found that there is only one video of the
accused herself. She has not recorded any other video of anyone else. Electronic
devices and mobile phones have been taken into custody and sent for forensic
examination.
3. Chandigarh University Pro-Chancellor
RS Batwa issued a statement saying: “The rumour which is circulating through
media that 60 objectionable MMS have been found of students…is totally false
and baseless. During the preliminary investigation conducted by the University,
there have been no videos found of any student which are objectionable except a
personal video shot by a girl which was shared by herself to her boyfriend.”
4. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann
wrote on Twitter: “Sad to hear the incident of Chandigarh University. Our
daughters are our pride. Have ordered a high level inquiry into the incident.
Whoever is guilty will take strict action. I am constantly in touch with the
administration. I appeal to you to avoid such rumours.”
5. Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief
Minister and Aam Aadmi Party supremo, called the incident ‘shameful’. “In
Chandigarh University, a girl has gone viral by recording objectionable videos
of many girl students. This is very serious and shameful. All the culprits involved
in this will get the harshest punishment. Victim girls have courage. We are all
with you. All act with patience.
6. Congress’ Pawan Khera tweeted: “To
all responsible Indians, please do not repost, forward or share any MMS/video
of the #chandigarhuniversity horror. Let us be a digitally responsible society.”
7. Sonu Sood, the actor and philanthropist,
tweeted: “Something that happened in Chandigarh University is very unfortunate.
It’s time for us to stand with our sisters and set an example of a responsible
society. These are testing times for us, not for the victims. Be responsible!”
