After two years of being stuck in every caller’s head, the COVID-19 caller tune is “likely to stop soon”.

“No more caller tune on COVID-19. It is going to stop soon,” an official told news agency ANI.

According to the news agency, the government will soon issue an order to discontinue the caller tune, now that the trajectory of the virus has observed a steep decline in the country.

The caller tune was introduced two years ago after India witnessed the first wave of the coronavirus. Since then, the tune, which contains information on COVID-19 safety measures, has irked callers across the country.

Several people have complained about being repetitively forced to hear the complete tune every time a call was dialed by them.

Reacting to the news, several callers breathed a sigh of relief and expressed their elation on social media.

The caller tune began with the audio of people sneezing and coughing, suggesting that they had caught the virus. The tune also consisted of a voiceover artist listing precautions and guidelines to prevent getting infected.

After a few months, the caller tune was revamped, featuring the voice of veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan.

After the launch of vaccination drives across the country, the caller tune was replaced again, consisting of information on getting inoculated and avoiding vaccine-related rumours. The caller tune also comprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan ‘dawaai bhi, kadaai bhi’ (medicine and caution).
