As the Australian women’s cricket team emerged victorious over India in the opening match of the Commonwealth Games 2022, wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy became the first-ever wicketkeeper to register 100 dismissals in T20I cricket.

The July 29 match also marked the debut of women’s cricket in the Commonwealth Games. This is the second time that cricket has been added to the mega-event roster, the first time being in the 1998 edition when Australia clinched the silver medal, however, India was knocked out in the group stages.

Healy, 32, caught and dismissed Indian opening duo Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, the first of whom was also the Indian vice-captain. She also denied the latter the chance to become the first-ever woman cricketer to score a half-century at the Commonwealth Games. However, that record was later claimed by Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur.

The Australian ace has registered 101 dismissals as a wicketkeeper in the T20I format in her career, 10 more than legendary Indian keeper MS Dhoni (91), who has the record of highest dismissals in men’s T20I cricket. However, Healy leads the chart in both men’s and women’s T20I cricket combined.

Other names in the list include England’s Sarah Taylor (74), South Africa’s Quinton de Kock (73) and compatriot Rachel Priest (72).

Despite touching the unique milestone against India while keeping, Healy could not impress with the bat as she was sent back to the pavilion with a duck, caught out by Deepti Sharma. She played only two opening balls in the innings, leaving Australia 0-2 when she was dismissed.

Australia, however, registered an impressive win, courtesy of the half-century by Ashleigh Gardner and Grace Harris’ 37 runs off 20 balls. They will face Barbados in their second group stage match on Sunday, July 31.
