The Delhi Police on Tuesday registered an FIR against unknown persons associated with a Clubhouse chatroom targeting Muslim women.

The FIR was registered after the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued a notice to the Cyber Cell about “obscene comments against Muslim women” that were heard in a Clubhouse chatroom conversation posted online on Twitter.

“Someone tagged me on Twitter the detailed audio conversation on the Clubhouse app which targeted Muslim women and girls and made disgusting sexual comments against them. I feel outraged over the fact that such incidents are increasing in the country. Strongest action needs to be taken against the culprits and that’s why I have issued a notice to Delhi Police seeking immediate FIR and arrests in the matter,” said DCW chief Swati Maliwal.

In cognizance of the notice, KPS Malhotra, DCP (Cyber Cell), said that an FIR had been lodged under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 354 A (sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment).

The DCW has further given the Delhi Police five days’ time to submit a detailed action report on steps taken to address the issue.

This development comes days after Muslim women were targeted by a mobile application called Bulli Bai. The app had hundreds of Muslim women listed for “auction” using photographs sourced and doctored without authorisation.

A similar row had erupted last year when an app called Sulli Deals had targeted Muslim women in similar manner.
