Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket via an Instagram post on Friday, August 15, evening leaving his fans completely surprised. The unexpected announcement, however, was much like Dhoni’s on field persona – cool, calm and composed.

“Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. From 1929 hrs consider me as Retired,” the former wicket-keeper batsman, who will continue to play IPL for the Chennai Super Kings, wrote in his post along with a video on the social media app. The video showed Dhoni celebrating India’s numerous victories over the years under his captaincy.

Dhoni’s sudden announcement also triggered a call by fans across the globe for a farewell match for him. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren too joined in urging the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to host one last international game for the former captain.

However, former IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla said Dhoni never told the BCCI that he was wanted to play a farewell match.

“Dhoni never expressed any will to BCCI for a farewell match for him. Since he never raised it, there’s no question of any such match,” news agency ANI quoted Shukla, as saying.

Fans have also urged the BCCI retire Dhoni’s number seven jersey as a tribute to the former captain. Former middle order batsman Mohammad Kaif, India women’s ODI team captain Mithali Raj too expressed similar sentiments. “Can’t imagine any one else wearing a Number 7 India jersey again. Thank you for the unforgettable memories #MSDhoni. See you in UAE,” Kaif said in this Twitter post.
