Indian opener Shubman Gill, batting on 70, escaped a close call after the Decision Review System (DRS) was down due to a technical glitch. KL Rahul and co lock horns against Bangladesh in the first Test of the two-match series at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram. 

Leading India to a massive second innings lead on Day 3 of the first Test, Gill was deceived by Yasir Ali’s sharp spin. The ball hit the batter’s pads and Bangladesh appealed.

The impact seemed outside off-stump. But the call was dicey and the on-field umpire’s decision was in the batter’s favour. Bangladesh straightaway wanted to go to the third umpire via DRS. 

However, the third umpire informed that they were not able to use DRS because of a technical glitch – the ball-tracking camera was down. The on-field umpire’s decision stayed. Shakib Al Hasan, visibly disappointed, had a chat with the umpires.

“All these “DRS not working” excuses would favour Gill and others, only if it is Virat, even a not out given out on on-field umpire’s decision if wanted to be reviewed could not be done,” a Twitter user said. 

“DRS was not working for a review. 😂” another one tweeted. 

“I think he was out. If DRS had not packed up,” a third one tweeted. 

Gill, after putting up a 70-run stand with KL Rahul, kept building on India’s lead with Cheteshwar Pujara at the other end. 

Earlier in the game, spinner Kuldeep Yadav registered career-best figures of five for 40 as Bangladesh could survive only 55.5 overs in their first innings.

Pacer Mohammed Siraj (3/20 in 13 overs) deserved equal credit for his incisive spells on second afternoon and evening.

With a lot of deliveries starting to keep low in the second Indian innings, the spin troika of Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep and Axar Patel will be eager to come out on fourth and fifth day to ensure full 12 World Test Championship points for the team.
