The farmers’ protest against Centre’s farm laws entered day 62 on Tuesday. The agitating farmers held a tractor rally, which took a violent turn as police had to resort to lathicharging and firing tear gas shells to disperse the protestors, as their rally reached many central Delhi locations, including Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, ITO and the Red Fort.
After hours of chaos, the thousands of farmers, including those at the Red Fort and Mukarba Chowk, started returning to their sit-in protest sites at the Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders.
One farmer died in the violence and a number of police personnel were injured as traffic routes were diverted, metro stations were closed and internet access was snapped in various areas across Delhi.
The 11th round of talks between the Centre and the farmer unions on Friday remained inconclusive.
Thousands of farmers have been camped at various border sites around Delhi to protest against the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, enacted during the Monsoon session of the Parliament in September.
