Kerala will see heavy to very heavy rains from November 12 to 14, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The northeast monsoon has been active over Kerala, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for five districts from Saturday and one from Sunday.  

The six districts include Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki while the five are Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki.

Kerala received 589.9 mm of rain in October this year, the highest since 1901 and more than double of what the state received during the same month last year, according to data released by the IMD.

Cheruthoni Dam’s shutters may be opened on Saturday or Sunday. In light of this, the Idukki district Collector stated that the shutters of the Cheruthoni Dam of the Idukki reservoir may be opened on Saturday or Sunday if rain continues in the district. 

People living downstream of the Idukki dam and along the banks of the Periyar river should also be cautious, warned the Collector. Kerala received 86% more rain from October 1 to 12 than usual, according to the IMD website. 

The normal rainfall for the period of October 1 to 12 was 392.9 mm, but the state has received 732.4 mm so far, according to the website.

Rainfall will be light to moderate in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Due to a depression over the Bay of Bengal, heavy rain is expected in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next few days, causing flooding in some areas.

According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema south interior Karnataka, and Kerala over the next 24 hours, with heavy rainfall in isolated places.

Parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has witnessed heavy rainfall over the next few days due to depression over the Bay of Bengal, leading to water-logging in parts of the state.
