Thousands
of protesting farmers, peacefully agitating against the three Central farm laws
in Delhi for past two months, broke police barricades and marched on to various
central Delhi locations as their ‘Kisan Tractor Parade’ took a violent turn on
Tuesday. A large group of protesters barged into central Delhi’s Red Fort and
hoisted a Nishan Sahib flag atop its dome.

Several police officials were injured and the stand-off at the historical site continued late into the evening. Here’s what happened at Delhi’s Red Fort during the Republic Day tractor rally.

  • Protesters participating in the Kisan Tractor rally were pushed back by the Delhi police from the ITO in Central Delhi and a group of the protesting farmers drove their tractors to the nearby Red Fort complex.
  • Deviating from pre-decided routes for the rally, protesting farmers reached Red Fort on tractors.
  • According to a video released by ANI, the crowd stormed the monument and went up the mast on the ramparts of Red fort and hoisted a Nishan Sahib, a religious flag.

  • Several bogus claims of Khalistani flag being hoisted by the protesters started doing the rounds on social media.
  • However, images and video from the Red Fort cleared the air as it could be seen that the flag hoisted had nothing to do with Khalistan and were Sikh religious flags.
  • At least 41 police personnel were injured during the clash between protesters and police at the Red Fort, said Delhi Police in a statement.
  • The Delhi Police on Tuesday registered four FIRs in connection with the protesting farmers’ tractor parade in the national capital.
