South Korean automobile major Hyundai Motor wants to be a bigger player in the electric vehicle segment for which it has launched the new ‘Ioniq’ brand. The brand dedicated to EVs will unveil three new battery operated vehicles in the next four years. Will Hyundai drive in the cars to India? The company is yet to reveal details.

According to reports, Hyundai is planning to launch Ioniq 5 midsize CUV, which will be based on the concept EV ’45’ showcased at 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, by early 2021. Next in the line is a sedan- Ioniq 6 which may break cover in 2022. The company also is working on an electric SUV – Ioniq 7 which is likely to reach the showrooms in early 2024.

Wonhong Cho, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company, said that the Ioniq brand is aimed at changing the EV customer experience. He said the company is working to offer “electrified experiences integral to an eco-friendly lifestyle,” NDTV reported.

Hyundai is aiming to be a major EV player in the world targetting the third spot in the list by 2025.

India has been a prime market for Hyundai. The company has sold more that 400 units of Hyundai Kona EV so far since its launch in 2019 and with the government pushing to develop infrastructure for electric vehicles in the country, Hyundai may consider to launch its Ionic series in India too.
