England captain Joe Root on Thursday contributed majorly to
the destruction of the Indian innings, receiving assistance to a large degree
by fellow-spinner Jack Leach.

Root’s bowling figures were staggering, especially for a specialised
batsman without any significant bowling stints in international cricket. The
skipper picked up a total of five wickets with an expense of eight runs, boasting
an economy rate of 1.26.

The Indian innings was finished off fast, with the fall of
wickets starting with Rohit Sharma. As the top-order batsman left with a score
of 66, none of the latter batsmen could bite the ground and fight on.

Runs from the the last five names in the Indian line-up looked
something like this: Rishabh Pant (1), Ravichandran Ashwin (17), Washington
Sundar (0), Axar Patel (0), Ishant Sharma (10*), Jasprit Bumrah (1), enough to
demonstrate the first half decimation brought forward by Root.

Having bowled a total of 6.2 overs, Root took three maiden overs. Essentially, this would signify a total of 3.2 overs where a total of eight runs were given out by Root.

England’s innings, on the previous day, was finished off with a total score of 113.
