The first proposal for railways in India were made in Madras in the year 1832. The country’s first train, called the Red Hill Railway, was built by Arthur Cotton to transport granite for road construction between the Red Hills to the Chintadripet bridge in Madras in 1837. In 1845, Cotton built the Godavari Dam Construction Railway to supply stone for the construction of a dam over the Godavari River. 

The first passenger train in India was started in the year 1853. It hauled three steam locomotives and ran for 34 kilometres with 400 people in 14 carriages between Bori Bunder in Mumbai and Thane. It was operated by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. 

Eastern India’s first passenger train ran for 39 kilometres from Howrah near Kolkata to Hoogly on 15 August, 1854. The first passenger train in South India ran 97 kilometres between Royapuram-Veyasarapady in Madras to Wallajabad in Arcot on July 1, 1856.
