According to official media citing a key government regulator, Sri Lanka’s tea exports will earn 1.3 billion US dollars in 2021. 

Tea exports had topped 1.2 billion US dollars by the end of November, according to Jayampathy Molligoda, chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB), the tea industry’s leading regulatory and administrative authority, and will surpass 1.3 billion US dollars by the end of 2021. 

According to the state-owned Daily News, the tea business in Sri Lanka employs 500,000 smallholders, 135,000 estate workers, roughly 20 regional plantation corporations, 590 tea factories, and 280 tea exporters. Molligoda, speaking at the anniversary of the Colombo Tea Auction’s adoption of an e-auction system, noted that the digital technology had aided in price stabilisation. 

 Sri Lanka gained 1.2 billion dollars from tea exports in 2020, according to the Ministry of Finance. 

Sri Lanka’s main exports are textiles and apparel (52% of total exports) and tea (17 percent ). Spices, jewels, coconut goods, rubber, and fish are among the others. The United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, and Italy are the main export partners.
