The Khatu Shyam temple in Rajasthan’s Sikar was the site of a large stampede that killed at least three people and two injured. Police officials said that all three victims who died were women. The identities have not been released so far.
The Khatu Shyam temple, considered to be an important Hindu pilgrimage site, saw a large influx on early Monday morning. Visitors waited in long queues outside the temple on the day of ‘Gyaras’.

The doors of the temple opened up around 4:30 PM, the crowd reportedly started entering in a disorderly fashion. A 63-year-old woman, who was suffering from a heart ailment, collapsed in the stampede. Two other women standing behind her also fell.
Police officials were later seen rushing to the Khatu Shyam temple to control the situation. Kunwar Rashtradeep, a senior police official of Sikar, said that the crowd has now been brought under control, according to NDTV. He added that the CCTV footage is being examined for better clarity on the incident.
Two other people were also injured in the stampede on early Monday. Police officials informed that the two individuals have been taken to a hospital in Jaipur for treatment.
The Khatu Shyam temple is considered to be an important destination for worshippers of Lord Krishna. ‘Gyaras’ is the 11th day of the Hindu lunar month, when thousands of people visit the temple.

While the incident is still being investigated, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot announced that the families of those who died would receive compensation of Rs. 5,00,000. Those injured would get Rs. 20,000.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his condolences on social media. He wrote, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede at the Khatu Shyamji Temple complex in Sikar, Rajasthan. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest.”
