Chinese weightlifter Zhihui Hou, who clinched the gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, will be undergoing tests that will be conducted by the anti-doping authorities, news agency ANI reported.

The news report also added that if the Chinese lifter fails the test, India’s Mirabai Chanu, who took home a historic silver, will be awarded the gold.

“She has been asked to stay in Tokyo and the test will be done. The test is definitely happening,” a source was quoted as saying by ANI.

According to the rules, if an athlete fails the doping test, the athlete who has won silver will be awarded the gold.

China’s Zhihui Hou lifted a total of 210 kg and created a new Olympic Record.

The 24-year-old world championship silver medallist Hou dominated the 49kg competition, opening up a 7kg advantage over Mirabai after the opening three lifts.

Hou’s 94kg third attempt was below her own snatch world record but it gave her a healthy cushion over Mirabai, who could only manage 87kg, failing with her final attempt at 89kg.

“I felt very happy when I finally made it. In one second all the stress disappeared. I prepared for five years so it means a lot to me,” Hou said.

Mirabai Chanu opened India’s medals tally on Saturday by winning a silver in the Women’s 49kg category.

The Indian weightlifter lifted a total of 202 kg (87kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk) during her four successful attempts across the competition.

Mirabai became the only second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari won bronze in the 69kg category at the 2000 Sydney Games.

“I am very happy, I have been dreaming of this for the past five years. I am very proud of myself right now. I did try for gold but even silver is a great achievement for me,” she said after the medal ceremony.

Teenager Windy Cantika from Indonesia settled for bronze after she lifted 110kg in her third attempt.
