A 34-year-old woman, who was raped and assaulted with an iron rod in her private parts, succumbed to her injuries during treatment at a civic-run hospital in Mumbai, the police said on Saturday. The victim suffered injuries in her private parts and there was severe blood loss in the incident. As per an official, she was in a critical state when she was brought in and was fighting to stay alive at the Rajawadi Hospital since Friday.

Investigations revealed that the accused, after raping the woman and brutally assaulting her with the rod, also attacked her with a knife.

The incident came to the fore when police received a call about a man thrashing a woman at Kahirani Road in Sakinaka, an official said. The authorities rushed to the spot and found the woman lying in a pool of blood. The victim was admitted to the Rajawadi Hospital.

“During the investigation, it came to light that the woman was raped and brutally assaulted with an iron rod on her body and private parts inside a tempo parked by the roadside,” he said, adding that the police also had found bloodstains on the tempo.

While analysing the CCTV footage of the area, police zeroed in on a suspect as he was found in the video leaving the tempo, he said.

Police later arrested Mohan Chouhan (45) and an offence was registered against him, he said.

The accused was arrested under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 376 (rape).

“We will make sure that the charge-sheet is filed within a given frame of time & the case is fast-tracked to bring the accused to justice,” news agency ANI quoted Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik as saying on the case.

“Only 1 accused arrested (in Mumbai rape case). National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo moto. If there isn’t any development in matter until this evening, I’m going to send a member to inquire about it & also extend help to victim’s family,” Rekha Sharma, NCW Chairpersoncase, said.
