An elderly Muslim man was allegedly assaulted in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad by a group of men, police said on Monday. A video of the alleged incident, which took place on June 5 in Ghaziabad’s Loni, has surfaced on social media, in which the elderly man can be seen being beaten by the accused.

Police said that an FIR in connection with the incident has been filed, and one of the primary accused has been arrested.

“A video has been circulating on social media in which an elderly man was assaulted. An FIR in connection with the incident has already been filed and one main accused is presently detained. We are questioning the local residents in the area and other steps will also be taken to ensure the remaining accused are also arrested at the earliest,” said Atul Kumar Sonkar, Circle Officer, Loni.

The victim was identified as Bulandshahr resident Abdul Samad Saifi. In the video, the accused can also be seen trying to cut off Saifi’s beard.

One of the accused has been identified as Pravesh Gujjar, a Ghaziabad resident.

Saifi alleged that he was travelling in an autorickshaw when he was abducted by two men, who were sitting in front of him. He said he was taken to a “jungle area” and was beaten up by the accused, allegedly over his religion. The cops have not confirmed the religious angle to the incident and are still investigating the matter.
