National Education Day is being celebrated on Friday, November 11, all over India. This day marks the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the country’s first education minister. On September 11, 2008, the Ministry of Human Resource Development declared November 11 to be “National Education Day” in memory of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

The theme of National Education Day 2022

The theme for National Education Day 2022 is “Changing Course, Transforming Education.”

The theme is decided every year by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. This year’s theme suggests that the educational system needs to be reformatted to be contemporary.

History 

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was the Education Minister of India from August 15, 1947, till February 2, 1958. He was a prominent member of the Indian National Congress as well as a writer, theologian, and a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a key figure in establishing India’s educational framework. He always placed a strong emphasis on girls’ education and the free required education of all under the age of 14.

He encouraged giving all children technical education in addition to basic education and vocational training. With a great vision, he always encouraged people to raise awareness about education and he worked hard to strengthen the education system of our country. He wanted to see his country develop in terms of education and he strongly believed that if a country’s education system is strong enough, then there will be no poverty and illiteracy.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) built the nation’s first IIT in 1951 and the University Grants Commission (UGC) was established in 1953 under Abul Kalam Azad’s inspiration. He thought that these organizations will play a significant role in the future of higher education. During his administration, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the higher education system was also founded. He also founded the renowned Jamia Millia Islamia University.

To honor his contributions, India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) declared November 11 to be National Education Day.
