Cricketer-turned commentator Aakash Chopra on Friday questioned the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) selection of former Indian skipper, MS Dhoni, to the T20 Team of the Decade.

Dhoni was named as the T20 team’s captain last week, in a squad that included Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah.

Pointing out the exclusion of a dynamic modern-day player like Jos Buttler, Chopra in a Facebook video said, “I am slightly intrigued because if you talk about T20Is in this decade, neither has India won anything nor has Dhoni done that well in T20Is. We are making a T20I team and it does not have players like Jos Buttler etc.

He further added that the Indian team didn’t win any major tournament under Dhoni this decade (2010-2020). The cricket expert asked for a justification for not including any Pakistani in the side when Sarfaraz Khan’s side sat on the top of the ranks for quite some time.

My major bone of contention is that it seems they have not made the T20I team at all. They are making the team of the decade and it is not only about the Pakistani thing why none of their players are there but it just doesn’t make sense. A T20I team generally has 5-6 batsmen and then should have five bowlers at least. It is even better if there are 6-7 bowling options,” Aakash Chopra added.

ICC’s T20I Team of the Decade: Rohit Sharma, Chris Gayle, Aaron Finch, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, MS Dhoni (c), Kieron Pollard, Rashid Khan, Jasprit Bumrah, and Lasith Malinga.

MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020, just before the IPL kick-started in the UAE. Acclaimed as among the best white-ball captain of his generation, Dhoni played 73 T20Is, scoring 1,175 runs over a period of 10 years. The Ranchi based wicketkeeper-batsman led a young Indian team to the first major T20I triumph in 2007. He averaged 45.23 in the format, with 56 being his highest. However, in the last decade, the Indians haven’t seen any tournament victory when it comes to the shortest format- their best coming during the 2014 World Cup where the Men in Blue lost to Sri Lanka in the finals.
