Amid an ongoing tussle between the Central Government and Twitter over the new IT rules, the parliamentary panel chaired by Congress’ Shashi Tharoor told Twitter officials on Friday that the the “rule of the land” is “supreme” and not their policy.

At the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information & Technology, in response to the question, if Twitter India follows the law of the land, a Twitter representative said, “We follow our own policies,” news agency ANI reported.

The meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information & Technology was held in Delhi on Friday in the presence of Twitter’s representatives.

ANI reported Twitter India’s officials were asked by the members of the Standing Committee why Twitter shouldn’t be fined when it has violated Indian laws. Twitter officials reportedly told the committee that it has been following rules and has even appointed an interim chief compliance officer.

It was also pointed out by the panel that Twitter has been fined in Ireland earlier.

The panel members reportedly asked Twitter representatives appearing before it to submit in writing the information on how they are “placed in Twitter India” and the amount of “executive authority” they hold in “taking important policy decisions.”

A Twitter spokesperson said after the meeting that they will “continue working alongside the Indian Government” as a part of their “shared commitment to serve and protect the public conversation.”

“We appreciate opportunity to share our views before Standing Committee on IT. Twitter stands prepared to work with the Committee on important work of safeguarding citizens’ rights online in line with our principles of transparency, freedom of expression, & privacy, (sic)” the Twitter spokesperson was quoted as saying by ANI.
