Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s announcement of a week-long
lockdown in the capital on Monday almost instantly led to long queues outside liquor shops. Among those in a queue in east Delhi was a fiesty elderly woman holding forth on the merits of a peg. The video went viral, attracting hilarious comments on social media.
A video, posted by news agency ANI on Twitter, showed an
elderly woman outside a liquor shop in Shivpuri Geeta Colony, claiming alcohol,
and not medicine, would save her life.
In the 52-second clip, she says she
will benefit more from alcohol than from medicine.
“Injection fayda nahi karega, ye alcohol fayda karegi. Ye
dawai se hamare ko koi asar nahi hoga, hamare ko peg se asar hoga (The injection
won’t do me any good, but the alcohol will be useful. The medicine will not have
any effect on me, but the alcohol will)”, she is seen saying in the video.
“Mere ko 35 saal ho gaye peete hue, maine aaj tak koi bhi
dose nahi li doosri (It has been 35 years since I started drinking. I never
took any other dose)”, she further says.
The video received close to 25,000 likes and more than 6,000
retweets, alongside more than 780,000 views, and got various reactions from
netizens in the comment section.
While some proceeded to criticise her actions, others made
memes out of the incident, in typical Twitter fashion.
“People like her are responsible for deaths!! If we behave
the same way, We will see another wave of Corona which will be even harsh!!”,
